Reggae legend Lee Scratch Perry is cosmic. And now likes BitTorrent

May 18th, 2014

Reggae luminary and cosmic traveller Lee Scratch Perry is embracing BitTorrent technology at 78 years of age.

Perry has worked with nearly every reggae legend as a producer, writer, and composer spanning a 50-plus year career — he was one of the first to produce Bob Marley in the early 1970s in Jamaica — and now he’s released his first song on BitTorrent, a new track called “Jesus is a Soul Man.” It marks a seismic shift for the singer.

AIDONIA: Doing it for the ladies

May 9th, 2014

It has been nine years since Aidonia first made headlines in the dancehall with gun-toting songs like Bad People, Fraid A We and From Dem Dis.

But two years ago, the deejay changed his tune and, according to him, turned his attention to the ladies. That change of sound has resulted in well-received songs such as Six Thirty, Tan Tuddy, Fi Di Jockey and Bruki.

March 14th, 2014

The look on the face of entertainer Vybz Kartel when his guilty verdict was handed down yesterday said it all.

The deejay, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, appeared drained and forlorn as he seemed to try to come to grips with the fact that he could be spending more than two decades behind bars for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.

Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry review – the Peter Pan of reggae | Music | The Guardian

March 14th, 2014

"Give me a light," yells Lee Perry, producing a lighter from his ring-enclustered fingers and attempting to set fire to his microphone. Moments later, he raises the flame above his head and for a millisecond it seems as if York Fibbers might go the way of his Black Ark studio, which he famously burned to the ground.

The Jamaican’s reputation as an oddball precedes him, and yet cannot surpass his enormous contribution to music as the pioneer of dub and producer of everyone from Junior Murvin to Bob Marley. However, the glint in his eye suggests he knows people expect eccentricity as well as sound. Wearing what look like purple pyjamas and a cap covered in CDs, he invites the crowd to admire his silver boots and chuckles to himself while shaking outstretched hands.

Bob Marley’s 69th anniversary

February 6th, 2014

BOB Marley died at the age of 36. I recall seeing him alive at the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, where his sons were altar servers. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church is the closest church, theologically, to the Roman Catholic Church in Jamaica, and there were times, as a young man, when I would pay a visit. I also recall seeing him in his coffin in the National Arena with his guitar in one hand and a Bible in the other.

Bob Marley put reggae and Jamaica on the map through music in the way that Herb McKenley and Arthur Wint had done through athletics. In a real way he helped to sell our sugar, bananas, bauxite, and whatever else because of reggae. I believe that it was because Jamaica became known for reggae that our national football team is called the Reggae Boyz. It helped the tourism product, which is today second only to remittances in bringing in our much-needed foreign exchange.

Home-grown reggae the best – Chris Martin, Chronixx keep faith in Jamaican beat

February 6th, 2014

Despite Jamaica’s popular music forms coming under increasing international competition from overseas artistes who have honed their skills in reggae and dancehall especially, two of the more prominent younger artistes are not feeling threatened.

“I believe that the best form of reggae music and the best form of Jamaican music will always be in Jamaica,” said Chronixx, who performed at the 2014 Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival, Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium, Trelawny.
