Artistes deliver at night two of St. Kitts Music Festival

Although the second night of the St. Kitts Music Festival appeared to have a much smaller crowd compared to past Reggae Nights of the event, the artistes that were scheduled to perform delivered the goods.

Not quite ready to Rock Steady

The brainchild of Stascha Bader took another closer step to reality on Wednesday night with the staging of Get Ready to Rock Steady, the concert, at the National Indoor Sports Centre featuring a slew of pioneers from that genre around which a documentary is being made.

But while one cannot fault the level of performances which, in the main, were extremely satisfying, something was missing, and it robbed the event of that air of authenticity that it so richly deserved. Not in terms of the music and performers, but the atmosphere was not there and one got a sense that not enough was done to recreate the ethos of that colourful period in our musical history.

Travel: Jeep thrills

It’s billed as the honeymoon capital of the Caribbean, but a growing band of visitors is eschewing the beaches and falling in love with Aruba’s dramatic desert interior

The pair of them sit idle under the intense morning sun. Clinging to a large, dusty rock, they seem to be enjoying their sunbathing. Unfazed by our presence, the couple remain still, allowing their greyish skin to sizzle. Evidently it’s not only the tourists who partake in a little bronzing in Aruba; even the reptiles are at it. In fact, they’re known for it.

When it comes to music, Jamaica’s hothouse scene offers an unusually vivid case study of how a particular ecological niche can yield a startling profusion of forms. And no person has played a bigger role in the rapid evolution of the island’s musical styles than composer and singer Derrick Morgan, who makes his first Boston-area appearance since 2001 tomorrow at the Middle East Downstairs, where he performs with the local ska combo the Void Union.
