Ninja Man declares his innocence

Deejay Ninja Man is proclaiming his innocence following police reports that he is wanted for questioning about the murder of 20-year-old Ricardo Johnson last Tuesday.

Yesterday, it was reported that Ninja Man, real name Desmond Ballentine, was a person of interest to the police in the case involving the murder of Johnson, otherwise called Ricky Trooper.

CVM Television has joined Television Jamaica (TVJ) in refusing to air the carnival road march live amidst fears of breaching Broadcast Commission (BC) directives.

Will our Soca artistes ever measure up to regional artistes?

The recent International Soca Monarch competition held in Trinidad, which made history with the crowning of an eight-month pregnant Faye-Ann Lyons Alvarez, was indicative of the growth of soca music in the Caribbean.

The competition was held on Friday, February 20 and, as a means of promoting music as an export for a project spearheaded by the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Secretariat, reigning Soca Monarchs from around the Eastern Caribbean were sponsored to compete in the event.

Dancehall hurting reggae – Diaspora sounds off on ‘daggerin’ debate

A hot-button debate in New York on Wednesday, stimulated by the Broadcasting Commission’s banning of lewd lyrics from the country’s airwaves, ended with the conclusion that dancehall is a troubled genre poised to render Jamaican youths an endangered species.

The highly anticipated community forum and panel discussion staged by Coalition to Preserve Reggae (CPR) music and ZYNC TV New York Links, titled ‘Could dancehall be the ruination of reggae and, by extension, the Jamaica brand?’ saw some 200 participants turning out at the Billy Holiday Theatre in Brooklyn, CPR’s Sharon Gordon told The Sunday Gleaner.

Mavado’s ‘Special’ brand of dancehall justice

Bailed-out bankers should be thankful that the Jamaican dancehall singer Mavado doesn’t run U.S. economic policy. On his latest single, “So Special,” one of the rare dancehall records to spend time on recent Billboard Hot 100 R&B/Hip-Hop charts, he paints himself as an avenging angel of the poor and dispossessed. “Fire it ’til wet pon dat / you betta help poor people” he wails over a minimalist stutter-step beat. “Every dirty work, Jah shall show dem a sign,” perhaps one where the “special” is of the .45 variety he mentions in the song.

The ‘Arrow’ aftermath – Ninja claims win, Monster cries foul

The smoke has cleared and Ninja Man has declared himself the winner of the clash with Merciless at the Magnum ‘Follow Di Arrow’ show.

At the event, held at James Bond Beach, St Mary, the boos Ninja Man elicited seemed to signify his loss. The people sang along with Merciless, declaring him the winner. However, these sentiments are not shared by Ninja Man.

Message from the Underground

The word “culture”, its definition and the determination of what constitutes “culture” can be an extremely subjective and divisive subject. At its most basic, culture is the representation of a society’s knowledge, attitude, values and behaviour.

I don’t think any group or groups of people in a given society can monopolise its culture by claiming it as their own, as culture is created out of a shared collective experience to which all the members of society contribute and build on in some way.
