Family and friends of reggae singer Smiley Culture have expressed their frustration over the police’s failure to explain his death.

There were angry scenes at a Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) meeting at City Hall, in central London.

Meta Dia: Making that link with Reggae and Africa

There will be two firsts at Studio 38 on Sunday. It will mark the first time a foreign act will perform at the popular venue for which weekly live music is a staple. And it will be the first local appearance for Senegalese Meta Dia of Meta and the Cornerstones.

Reggae being the root of his musical inspiration, Dia (which is pronounced as Jah in Senegal) aims is to fuse Afro pop, hip hop, rock and soul along with a mixture of French, English, Wolof and Fulani vocals with the Jamaican sound.

‘A Better Tomorrow’
Jamaican dancehall superstar David Brooks aka “Mavado,” will headline the cast of local and other regional acts at the highly anticipated concert entitled “A Better Tomorrow,” which is scheduled for the Centre of Excellence, Macoya, next Tuesday – the night before the holiday.

The show is aimed at encouraging misguided youths to turn from a life of crime and project their energies towards becoming better educated and living a more positive lifestyle.

FIRST AND foremost, yes, we are aware that drug taking isn’t unique to any one genre of music, and this is by no means an attack on reggae. After all, rock music has a greater association with drug-taking; the famous expression ‘sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll’ says it all.

Similarly, many soul stars have fallen prey to drugs. Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye are just two famous stars who struggled with substance abuse.

Lovers Rock adj. romantic style of reggae music cultivated on the London reggae scene, c. 1975-1985.

While contemporary strands of reggae (dub, roots, rocksteady etc) were becoming increasingly politicised and serious, Lovers Rock maintained a clearer focus on more lightweight, romantic topics, taking its cue mainly from Philadelphia and Chicago’s soul and R&B templates.

Smiley Culture stabbed himself, inquest hears.

British reggae star Smiley Culture stabbed himself with a kitchen knife during a police raid on his home in Surrey, an inquest has been told.

The singer, whose real name was David Emmanuel, died at the property in Hillbury Road, Warlingham, on Tuesday.
