Beres Hammond & Marcia Griffiths

Reggae superstars Beres Hammond and Marcia Griffiths mix it up. It was one of those moments in Montreal reggae history that stained this city’s reputation: an all-out brawl on the dance floor of the Medley in October 1999, the night old-school reggae icon Beres Hammond co-headlined that year’s biggest reggae tour with dancehall don Buju Banton.

Sex tourism in full boom

Sex tourism in full boom

In winter, a tourist woman’s fancy lustily turns to thoughts of sex. By the thousands they descend on the Caribbean every year, women driven by one urge: to spend a week or two sleeping with local “beach boys” and paying them back in drinks, meals, gifts, and cash. And it is Quebec women — with reputations as financially generous and uninhibited — who are among the best established in the island flesh trade.

Joseph Israel – Gone Are the Days

Maybe it’s just me, but I think that every reggae song that I have ever heard sounds exactly the same. Call me uncultured or ignorant if you like, but I think if most people were honest with themselves they would have to say the same thing. I love Bob Marley’s music and give him all the respect as a musician, performer and activist that I can give. I know that reggae is widely adored and respected across the globe, and deservedly so, but I personally find most modern reggae dull and unimaginative.

Process for getting passports to change

Process for getting passports to change

“… gamblers taking the cheap bus trips to Niagara or Windsor won’t pay the $100 to get a passport. And parents are not going to want their kids going to Toronto if they have to pay $82 for a five-year passport for the school trip.” – John Latkovich, who runs JKL Tours

When it comes to the need for a passport, confusion reigns.
“We’re sending people to the post office to get the process started, no matter how they’re traveling,” says Arlene Kneen, 90, founder of Mentor-based Traveline, one of Ohio’s largest travel agencies.
Once the required paperwork is filed, it takes six to eight weeks for the passport to be received.

Reggae the Hasidic way

As the 49th Annual Grammy Awards approaches, The Sunday Gleaner will be featuring those nominated in the reggae category. They are Matisyahu, Buju Banton, Sly and Robbie, Ziggy Marley and UB 40. This week, we start with Matisyahu. Matisyahu, 27, a member of the Lubavitch Hasidic (Jewish) community, was born Matthew Paul Miller, but later changed his name to ‘Matisyahu’, the Hebrew name for Matthew.

‘Ting and ting’ and payola

Neville ‘Tinga’ Stewart is a man for all seasons. His music made quite a stir on the dancehall and festival music scenes in the ’70s to early ’90s, but he slowly disappeared from the Jamaican stage when he migrated to Miami in 1996. Still, his childhood love for music has lingered. How did you get your start in music? My first start in music came when I was younger and used to attend the St. Aloysius Boys’ School and I used to sing in the choir.

Beenie/Bounty face off, a big draw

A clash between dancehall rivals Beenie Man and Bounty Killer is still pending and promoters say they are willing to play host if both artistes agree. The much-anticipated square-off on stage between longtime rivals Beenie Man and Bounty Killer did not materialise at ‘Sting 2006′, nor did it materialise at ‘Campfire’, held in Ewarton on New Year’s Eve, where Beenie had extended an invitation for Bounty to meet him for a clash.

Flora gives ‘All Of Me’

Deciding to take the scenic route home, I pass Pari’s Pizza and as I’m heading down the hill towards Sandals, the sunset gives my little Glanza a soft glow, and for a moment I feel like I’m in a movie, lost in thought as Flora Haywood’s passionate and soulful voice blares through my speakers singing My Own Angel. It would appear that she’s my soundtrack for the moment, and what a soundtrack it is.
