The street was full and High Tension was in good form on Sunday night as the weekly oldies jam in Rae Town attracted its loyal following of music lovers, who came not to profile but to dance.

And dance they did, not only to the five ‘Ds’ that dominated – the songs of Delroy Wilson, Dennis Brown, the Mighty Diamonds and Errol Dunkley as well as disco and dancehall – but also to virtually everything else the selectors sent their way.

VP Records proposes buyout of Greensleeves

VP Records, the world’s leading reggae record company, yesterday announced that it has made an offer to purchase Greensleeves Records & Publishing from Zest Group plc, subject to the approval of Zest’s shareholders. VP Records will inherit a catalogue comprising some of the most notable albums of the genre, from Elephant Man to Yellowman and hit songs recorded by such acts as Rihanna, Sean Paul and Shaggy.

Barrels of foreign laughter

As jokers continue to be imported from across the seas, the appeal of international acts goes past the music industry and into commercial comedy. Along with the proliferation of comedy shows, especially in the Corporate Area, has come a larger number of overseas stand-up comedians on Jamaican stages.

In recent years, there have been some who have graced local shows on more than one occasion. These include Will Sylvince and David Arnold from the US, Slim from the United Kingdom, Rachel Pryce from Trinidad and Tobago and Drew Thomas and Michelle Buteau, who are currently in the United States.

Aidonia slapped with gun charges

Popular dancehall artiste, Aidonia will remain behind bars after being slapped with charges of illegal possession of a firearm and shooting with intent by members of the Kingston and St Andrew Major investigation task force yesterday. Two other suspects are also in custody facing the same charges, pending an identification parade.
